THE CLEVELAND PLAIN DEALER – WOW air, the fast-growing, low-cost carrier based in Iceland, said Wednesday that it will also start flying from Cleveland Hopkins to Reykjavik – mirroring an announcement that came just 24 hours earlier from Icelandair.

WOW will start the service May 4, with fares as low as $99 one way. Tickets went on sale this morning.

The service will run four days per week: Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, with flights departing Cleveland at 12:30 a.m. and arriving at Keflavik International Airport at 10:35 a.m. The return flight will leave Iceland at 9 p.m. and arrive in Cleveland at 11:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Said Skuli Mogensen, the CEO and founder of WOW: “We are proud to partner with Cleveland Hopkins International Airport to provide the lowest fares possible over the Atlantic to Northeast Ohio area travelers. Our goal is to help make international travel truly a possibility for everyone.”

From Reykjavik, travelers can connect to nearly two dozen cities in Europe, including London, Paris, Berlin and Copenhagen. Fares to cities in continental Europe start at $150 one way, according to the carrier.

Said Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson: “Cleveland has a strong international presence and is a major destination for tourists and business travelers. This announcement speaks to the hard work by Cleveland to become a global provider, connecting us to the European market and positioning the region for future growth.”

For eight years, Cleveland has no nonstop flights to Europe, after United Airlines cut routes to London and Paris in 2009 and 2008.

And now two airlines make back-to-back announcements that they plan to start transatlantic service in May 2018 – to Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland.

It’s a strange, happy development for Hopkins officials, who have planned a morning news conference to announce the service.

In a press release, airport director Robert Kennedy said: “WOW brings low cost fares for leisure travelers who can fly to Iceland or continue on to the many other European destinations WOW has to offer. The Cleveland market has responded favorable to low cost airlines like WOW air and we expect the respond to them to be no different.”

Earlier this year, WOW started seasonal, nonstop service from Pittsburgh International Airport. In addition to Cleveland, WOW’s announcement today includes new routes to Reykjavik from Cincinnati, Detroit and St. Louis.
