Technically, this doesn't talk about a new service from CLE, but it shows how a lack of new service is pretty frustration-especially when BA just announced 787 service between LHR and AUS, of all places.

Sorry, but someone in CLE or at UA in Chicago is not leveling with us.  There's still no reason, in my mind, why UA or LH can't do CLE-FRA.   I think a) UA simply doesn't give a hoot about CLE, and b) the city of Cleveland isn't pushing hard enough to get this service.

You beat me to it.  I saw that article and thought the same thing.  Austin?  British Airways?  787?  Lucky them.

Wow! Who saw that coming? I know Austin is a fast growing market with lots of tech firms, the University of Texas and, of course, the state government. I'm sure economics and demographics had something to do with it. To my surprise AUS (9.43 million=4% growth) surpassed CLE (9.00 million=-1.9% growth) in total passengers in 2012. No wonder BA is giving it a shot. It is unfortunate that UA or LH won't take a similar chance on CLE. But I'm not certain the business case is there for them.

I wonder if, like BWI, civic parties in AUS are quietly subsidizing this AUS-LHR route.  There is zero feed on the AUS end and potential LHR feed isn't *that* great (it's less than CLE's),  according to available data.  Plus, BA stopped taking risks some time ago.

CO tried to shake CLE down for a subsidy to keep the CLE-LGW flight year-round but CLE resisted. Thereafter CO made those flights seasonal. If CLE wants TATL any time soon, somebody is going to have to come up with some $$$$ and I don't see anybody in a rush to do that.

It was reported on the "other board" that a number of Austin businesses have guaranteed British Air a certain level of business.
