Interesting news:

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Cleveland's airport has won some time to prove it can be a profitable operation for a combined Continental-United airline.

Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray announced an agreement Monday settling an antitrust review of the pending combination.

The airlines agreed to maintain at least 90 percent of their flights at Cleveland Hopkins for two years. After that, cutbacks could result if the combined airline isn't making money in Cleveland.

Continental Airlines Inc. and United Airlines, whose parent is UAL Corp., said in a joint statement that they believe the combined operation will lead to "far superior" service at their hub locations.

Continental is Cleveland's dominant carrier and has more than 2,000 employees at Hopkins.

Here's more details from cleveland.com:

Here's the text of the actual agreement:

The need for this 2 year agreement spells out very bad news to me.  If Cleveland were as important as CO/UA want us to believe they think it is, they wouldn't say "be profitable or else."  It goes without saying that a hub should only exist if it is profitable.  This seems like a cop out to me, that way in 2 years UAL can go "hey, we had an agreement, sorry!" when they deem CLE "unprofitable" and leave.

I agree. It's an "out" for them to get away without being penalized.
