Going to be in Charlotte for an afternoonnight. Best place to stay for spotting? If any?

Hmmm...do you know Jay Selman?  He's from Charlotte and he and Angelo have gone spotting a couple times.  I haven't met him personally, but we have exchanged emails in the past and he's one of my Facebook friends.  I can send him a message for ya if you want.  I thought there was a CLT spotting site too?

It's cool. Just looking for a good hotel. Is there anything on the approaches or departures?

Mark

In CLT on Little Rock Road, right off of I-85, there is the Airport Inn, Courtyard Charlotte Airport, Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn. It appears that these are all in between the arrival and departure paths of 18C and 18L

If you Google Map the CLT airport and do street view you can see which one would offer a better opportunity for viewing

The biggest problem is the new runway that They opened at CLT its pretty much impossible to spot that runway and it takes alot of traffic from the two other runways so spotting isnt so great especially from the airport over look any more. I really dont know the name of streets to tell you the best spots i just know how to get there but Like Chuck and I said Jay Selman can definitely help you out and knowing him he would offer to take you around he is on facebook if you look under my friends list you can find him.

Arrived!

Despite the new runway the overlook is still a prime spot. They were using the 36's this evening when we went to the overlook and it was perfect. The new runway (36L) was being used only for some arrivals and they had to taxi right past the overlook to get to the gates. The rest of the traffic was using the Center runway and the right runway. So this pattern is awesome. I can see if they flip to the 18's that the overlook might not be good for the arriving traffic on 18R. But we will see what tomorrow brings. Every airport should take note on the overlook area at Charlotte. That is what a spotting area should be. Many benches, trash cans. Plenty of parking. And there were a lot of people out despite it being chilly for Charlotte. (low 40's) I was fine of course after just leaving single digits this morning and snow!

More later!!

Ya The outlook is great. There is always a lot of people there. There is another great spot at Murry aviation on the other side of the field for departure shots on 36 L The problem is i dont remember exactly how to get there.
