Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal is the Saudi owner of the only private A-380. Assuming he shares his family's heart problems he may want to fly the thing to a Cleveland Clinic visit.
Requirements for an A380 include 45m paved runway width and 60m including compacted shoulder, with a 120m minimum (155m desired) obstacle free zone. Taxiway 25M wide with 98m obstacle free zone. Weight shouldn't matter; I'm guessing a private A380 would operate light.
Can CLE meet these requirements or will he have to downgrade to the Gulfstream?
I asked on the CLE Facebook page and this is their response:
We've been told that although it would not be ideal because of the width of the A380 on our taxiways, we can accommodate an A380 on the airfield but we don't have the multiple boarding bridges normally utilized for such an enormous aircraft. We can and do accommodate the next largest aircraft the Boeing 747.
Thanks for the followup, guy. Taxiways seem to be the crucial issues at most airports. I'm guessing a private A380 wouldn't use the terminal's jetways.
The ICAO info sheet seems to allow for lots of variations from the ideal for occasional operations, but they're not specific. They leave lots up to local judgement.
The response from the airport is interesting, because they usually park the aircraft of dignitaries off-concourse and utilize portable airstairs for access. Customs clearing is accomplished on board the aircraft without the need to park at a jetway.
Even so, I honestly don't know if we can actually handle one out on the pad either.
