The shape of the Navy/Marines is changing!  Very interesting to see these planes in action...they almost don't seem real.

Nice video! So many issues with getting this plane in the air though, a real punch in the gut as far as advocating for advanced weaponry.

One thing that still bothers me about this design is what seems to be the limited weapons capability. I get the whole stealth thing, but I would love to see one of these maxed out with internal and external stores to see what it can really carry.

The "C" variant, intended for the big carriers has a nasty design problem. In tests it has been unable to catch the arresting cable owing to the MLG being positioned so far rearward that the angle of flare needed to get the hook close to the deck is excessive. A telescopic hook would add a lot of weight in the wrong place.

We are discovering all over again again that a common USN/USAF bird is an ugly one.

+1 from me on that - sounds like the F-111 all over again.

The F-111...I don't think we ever had a more soviet-bloc looking aircraft ever.  It wasn't the prettiest plane, but apparently rugged and versatile as hell.  My uncle worked on them in the Vietnam War, and my brother worked on them into the 1990's!

A bit off topic, but this thread got me to thinking about some of the Navy planes I grew up admiring, and from the jet-age I just keep thinking of the Vigilante.  Big, and all business-looking, it apparently was a bit of an under-performer, but still...it looked good!:

The F-111 was a great bomber...the original design though was supposed to be a dual Air Force/Navy aircraft.  As it was being developed the performance and weight didn't meet the Navy's specs so the Navy dropped out of the program - thankfully the F-14 was developed to fill the spot the Navy F-111 was going to fill.

I was such a wing nut as a kid, that when the F-111's hit Libya in 1986 I figured out they flew around France and Spain using my Air Forces of the World book, a ruler and a calculator! My parents truly thought I was weird until the news later figured it out. Slowpokes!

Too funny!  I used to do stuff like that all the time too, but not to that extent!  And what do you mean "was" a wingnut?  Is that something we outgrow? WinkLaugh

I'm a little more toned down now. I think I read Air Forces of the World cover to cover more than once back then, and it was not a book you read cover to cover.
