Hi Guys,

I need to outline a few rules for Geek Alerts that are probably overdue.  There are certain times and situations where a Geek Alert should not be posted and I hope I can clarify it for you all so we can avoid any unfortunate situations.

Firstly, Geek Alerts should be posted only when an aircraft or a flight is publicly announced or visible on one of the current flight tracking sites.  Any military, VIP, or unannounced postings will be deleted until such time as the information becomes public or the aircraft has arrived at the airport.  We are a public site, and many of our members are privy to what can be considered "inside information", and that is the main stuff I am talking about.

If you are uncertain or would just like to let me know, send me an email or personal message, and I will make the decision as to whether or not it is appropriate for public disclosure.

OPShots is committed to maintaining a good relationship with the City, and your help in this regard will be greatly appreciated!

So please...if you are unsure, don't post.  Send me an email or PM, and I'll return it to you ASAP.

Thanks everyone for your cooperation in these matters.  I can't monitor 24/7, so I am looking for your help to self-police ourselves.

Thanks Again,

Chuck

Sounds like a good deal to me!  I've always censored myself when it comes to that stuff!

I understand the need for this. However, is there a way to have a members only forum where this info *could* be posted? I'm talking a forum for card carrying members only, not just registered users. It could be one of the benefits to being a member.

And speaking of which, how is the id process coming along?

That's something we can certainly look at.  Now, there's nothing to say this information cannot be relayed to other members via private means, it just cannot be posted publicly.  I guess it's a fine line...

As for the Program, thanks for asking! I believe we will have this thing finally going within a week or so...stay tuned!

In the case of sensitivity with VIP arrivals, I guess it would also help to provide a link to the public, or available to the public source of this news.

Good idea!  That's exactly what I'm talking about...if it's already out there publicly with time of arrival, then that's fine.  It doesn't have to be in print somewhere, but if it's listed on FlightAware or other tracking sites, that's good too.

One other thing that may not be a bad idea. How about no posting alerts between 2300-0600. That would also CYA with the spouses.

I know some folks work nights, but like you said, you can't shoot it in the dark very well.

But something that comes in the night may stay until morning. So I say we still post it anyway. Plus if it is stationary long enough night shots are a breeze.

If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you.

Mark, you are missing my point. Post it at 6 am, NOT at 330 am. Some here may have spouses that don't appreciate knowing immediately in the middle of the night that something of interest has arrived. 6 am is still early enough to let the world know about it.
