I first noticed them last week, one MD-11 in place of the two 757's.

Forgive me for a stupid question.  Obviously, this is 1 plane instead of 2, so that means less frequency; what does it mean for capacity?  Will the single MD-11 hold more or less than the two 757's?

Yep, less frequency but bigger planes with no loss in capacity.  The MD-11 holds as much as 2 757's.  FedEx is in the same mode with reducing frequecies a few months ago from A300, A310 and 727 to two A300's.  It all fits!...although I'd rather see more planes but business is business.  Generally, a lot of the fleet is getting their scheduled mx checks done this time of year so they are available for the heavy fall and peak season when both capacity and frequency are needed.

Thanks for the great explanation, it makes total sense.  Just like on the passenger side of things, capacity meets demand and the equipment adjusts to accommodate.
