Here is an interesting article about local efforts to convince the new United to maintain its hub at CLE:

You need to be a member to view our links.

Most troubling is the transfer this month of ExpressJet pilots from CLE to ORD, as well as the transfer of CO's hub VP earlier.

What's the mood like among CO employees at CLE?

Well, the mood varies depending on who you talk to. Many are certain this is a death knell, while others are optimistic that CLE will still be a viable entity within the new UA. I like to say I fall into the latter group, but sometimes things do get worrisome.

To my knowledge (and I may be wrong), the XJT domicile at ORD is not in place of the CLE one, but in addition to, and it makes sense to me considering the amount of flying done in Chicago. If the CLE base closes, well...that would be harder to swallow.

Shifting of management personnel throughout the system is to be expected, and has been ongoing for some time as they pull from both CO and UA resources.

I'm happy to see the business community rallying around this issue, as business travelers have always been the highest source of income for the airlines. Unless I missed something, I haven't heard too much from the city itself, so businesses will have to be vocal about keeping service here as it is, if not increasing.

Personally, I think CLE is still a viable entity, but it may be just wishful thinking. I don't have spreadsheets to look at, and I don't know how we really stack up against the other hubs in the minds of the powers that be, but ultimately, they are going to do what they want. As always, I hope for the best!

With the casino, medical mart and other key projects breaking ground newnited would be wise to hold their territory. Other airlines will be waiting to take the share and I bet many of them already have plans in place if the do pull out.

If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you.
