Interesting article in today's PD about Smisek's visit to Cleveland and address at Jones Day:

Cleveland needs to prove that its airport can be profitable, United CEO Jeff Smisek says: You need to be a member to view our links.

Did any of you CO employees get to meet him yesterday?

He comes off as being rather flip, in my opinion. I don't believe for a minute that CO would remain in CLE if the hub was not making money. Is CLE's operation as lucrative as IAH or EWR? Most likely, NO, but it still has served a valuable function in CO's network these past 20+ years. Let's see if it can be viable in the new United.

"CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland needs to prove that its airport can be profitable for the newly merged Continental and United airlines, Executive Jeff Smisek said Wednesday.

"God does not come from on high and grant you hub status," he said in remarks to a luncheon gathering at the Jones Day law firm.

Smisek emphasized the merged carrier's commitment to Northeast Ohio. But it's a commitment based on demand, he said. The message was unmistakable: The former Continental hub at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport is safe only if it makes money for the new United."

Wow.. what well put words..Duh!...I feel their trigger finger twitching looking for a "Legal" reason to fire at CLE...I hope "god" as they say keep's our profits up.

Kiss 'em goodbye. They'll be pulling out just like United did the last time.

That sucks.

I rather not lose the already substantially downsized "hub", but after years of threats to a city they're "committed to", butt kissing to the airline with long-term debt incurred for expanded infrastructure coupled with reduced landing fees, it's gotten real old.  I would think the constant bullying would have been turning off customer/business loyalty a long time ago.  Perhaps intentional?

And CLE is supposed to prove profitability to them.  What a crock.  The city that at one time was their most profitable during their horrible reputation days as reported by the P.D. back then?  To an airline that has butchered the hub in flight and destinations over and over (the stuff that make real hubs work), promised a dramatic expansion in 2008 that proved to be a complete hoax and on and on...

Beyond the local employees that would be affected I long for the day this pathetic condescending charade by this airline will be over

Well, I hate to see CLE go, but to make the city of Cleveland and especially the politicans who run it look like the poor people who did everything they could for the airport, then you must be kidding yourself.  After years of corruption, mis-planning, over charging and so on and so on, the city sure had its hands in the demise...

According to the FAA's most recent (2009) CATS data, CLE's cost per emplaned passenger is $15 cheaper than EWR's. DOT data for Q2, 2010 says CLE yields are 4 cents higher than NYC's.

If CLE isn't profitable, a strong argument could be made that the problem is *not* CLE.

Actually the Port Authority has operated in almost complete isolation during the Jackson administration. They answer only too themselves it seems, and as long as local and regional governments got their cut, no one really cared what or how the Cuyahoga County Airport system operated.

While I am hopeful the new county government may eventually take control of and actively manage the Port Authority as the huge regional asset it could be, early indications are pretty stand-off-ish at this point.

BTW, Cleveland City Council's Aviation and Transportation meeting are open to the public. If you are concerned about airport operations I would start following that in person, online, or on local cable access.

I'm not talking about Jackson, I'm talking about the 11 years of Michael White running (ruining?) the city...  Cleveland landing fees were in the top 5 of the country for many, many years, and yes, only after CO threatening to cut back or leave did they get lowered, and supposedly that is only temporary, I'm not sure about that though.  The way the airport was run when I worked there was despicable, on some snow days in the morning there was nobody to plow, the one gate on A for international flights was a nightmare, I could just go on and on.

I don't work there anymore, so honestly, I'm not interested to attend meetings there.
