N700A (cn 1262) Here is an interesting one- technically, this is not an F8F-2 Bearcat, but caries a civilian designation of G58B. Built in 1950 This aircraft was never delivered to the Navy, but was instead used by Grumman for various duties (executive play-toy). Later owned by Bill Fornoff, he and his son Corky performed aerobatics in two of these aircraft. Sadly, Bill was killed in a crash in N700C, but Corky kept N700A flying. This aircraft performed in the 1980 Cleveland Air Show, and from best I can tell stayed in Cleveland for a year when I snapped this picture in August of 1981. Later owned by Steve Hinton, this aircraft now resides with Pond Warbirds in California in incorrect navy colors. Can you imagine such a gem of an aircraft just sitting behind a hangar at Burke with nothing between it and the public but a chain link fence? |
