None (cn None) Gilpin Airport founded founded by flight instructor Walter Douglas, had four unpaved runways and several hangars and a terminal. In 1958, his airport located in Northern Tucson closed. In 1960 it reopened as Freeway Airport with a single 4500 foot, paved runway. It still had several hangars and had added rows of new T hangars. Freeway Airport closed on June 5th, 1978. This picture of control tower & terminal building is from the late 1940\\\'s. Years later, after subdivision by Abrams Airborne Manufacturing Inc the building became the headquarters for The R.E. Darling fabrication company, which is now out of business. http://www.airfields-freeman.com/AZ/Airfields_AZ_Tuscon_N.htm |
