USA - Air Force Boeing KC-135A Stratotanker |
Oscoda - Oscoda-Wurtsmith (OSC/KOSC) USA - Michigan, - -, 1982 |

Registration/Serial No. | Remarks & Notes | |||
63-8039 (cn 18656) Another one from my archives. This was the result of a hydraulic system failure of a USAF Boeing KC-135A Stratotanker during an exercise Elephant Walk on a sunny afternoon at Wurtsmith AFB, MI, in 1982. This was the first KC-135 behind a line of B-52 Stratofortress’s, which took part in the simulated launch. As the aircraft attempted to brake at it approached the B-52, the Pilot realized he had no brakes. His split-second decision to steer the aircraft off of the runway saved many lives. Elephant Walks date back to WWI and were a regular occurrence at SAC bases back in the day. Once all of the fuel, approx. 31,000 gallons, was offloaded, two bulldozers were used to pull the aircraft back on the runway. I believe this aircraft is still in service today. |

N18703 (cn 18980) The 707 was one of the coolest passenger aircraft out there. TWA was a regular visitor to CLE with the 707 in the 1970's and early 1980's. This 707 served with TWA from 4/66 to 11/83. I never had the chance to fly in the 707- when I started to travel more, they were almost all retired. |

Unknown (cn Unknown) Air Wisconsin Dash-7 landing on Runway 5 at CLE in 1982. If I would have had better equipment, and not used 400 asa slide film, this would have been a much better shot. Still, a shot worth posting for historical value. I could not confirm the reg # despite my best efforts. Used to see a lot of the Dash 7 back then. Its takeoffs were always fun to watch because of the very short ground roll. |

N5303M (cn TC-203) I believe this photo was taken at BKL in 1982 when Freedom Airlines moved its operation to Cleveland Hopkins. In back is one of Freedom's Convairs also brought in for the air show. I was surprised to see only one other entry for Freedom in the data base. Unfortunately, I have gone through all my shots, and this is the only one I could find on this airline. |

N9063U (cn 19944) (Circa 1982.) Here's proof of United's hub in Cleveland. this was taken from gate 51 right at the corner where the "banjo" begins in the C concourse. 3 727's and 3 737's are parked at their gates on C, while in the background an Eastern DC-9 and 727sit at the B concourse which is in the process of losing its observation deck for the new, and current, B concourse. |
