About 2 years ago or so (I forget exactly how long), the Fly Boys Cafe at KMFD closed and the building has been sitting empty.  I went out Thursday evening to try to catch some Air Guard movements and I saw a sign on the building that said "Coming Soon: Subway."  Needless to say, I'm very excited!  This building is right on the tarmac and every restaurant that has been there before has had outdoor seating.  Traditionally, pilots taxi their small aircraft right up to the building and park for lunch!  The industrial complex near the airport should also give them lots of lunch-break business that a short-order diner (such as Fly Boys) just couldn't accommodate.  This will allow for great photo-ops without the obstacle of the fence!  There is no date listed for opening, and it looks as if nothing more than hanging the signs has been done.  I'll see what I can find out; I can't wait for this to open--you know where you'll find me now!

That's very cool, and the funny part is...I'm eating a Subway BMT as we speak!

Don't ya just love it!  The cool part is that you'll be able to sit there inside or outside practically on the runway and watch all the movements.  Mostly GA, but quite a diversity, nonetheless.  It will provide front-row seats to watch the Air Guard planes, too.  I'm very excited about this development!

You'll have to let us know when it opens and when the best time to ANG spot is!

The best time for ANG spotting is *usually* Thursday afternoons and into the evening.  They typically do touch-and-goes and other training maneuvers and on more than one occasion, I've watched them parachute onto the airfield--as many as 15-20 airmen jumping at once.  As for the opening of the Subway, I'll keep you posted on that; however, I have no news to add at this time.  I'll try to get out there later this week to see what I can see and report back.

Thanks for the info and the update.  Now we'll be able to go to MFD to watch airplanes and eat submarines!

I just read elsewhere that the MFD OHANG  has a couple of the new C-27J'S over in Afghanistan. You need to be a member to view our links. A first for that type.  Pretty cool.  Godspeed.

The 179th has participated quite a bit in the Afghanistan theater.  I have several friends who are stationed there who have gone to Afghanistan.  That was with the Herc's, so I'm not surprised they have the Spartans over there now.  Godspeed.
