N30068 (cn 10288) If only this picture was in color! This United DC-4 Cargoliner was used by NACA to test for icing rates during normal airline operations. The icing rate meter probe is the very thin inverted U shape wire in front of the air scoop. This aircraft was delivered to the USAAF on 3/8/44, was acquired by United on 3/31/47 and converted to DC-4 standards, and was used for carrying cargo. Serving United until 7/27/56, N30068 served with other operators until being w/o in a crash on 9/19/61. Photographed on the ramp at CLE, note the UA DC-3 also in the background.
