N30055 (cn 18341) A United DC-4 taxis to the gate at Cleveland Municipal Airport in the early 1950 time period. A recently purchased photo for my personal collection. The picture caption stated this aircraft was operating as a charter. Try as I might, I could not get the aircraft name or reg number.

44-65168 (cn 123-43754) Now designated as a F-82 (for the time frame the picture was taken in), this aircraft was based at NACA Lewis at Cleveland Municipal airport for many years. Note the guided missle under its wing and the NACA hangar in the background. This aircraft was later retired to the USAF museum in Dayton. Photo courtesy of the NASA Glenn Photo archives.

1-24485 (cn 41-24485) The crew of the original Memphis Belle pose with some dignitaries on the NACA Lewis ramp in Cleveland, Ohio on July 7. 1943. The crew flew their 25 combat missions from 11/7/42 to 5/17/43 against almost impossible odds, making it to the magic rotation home number of 25 missions. The aircraft itself flew its 25th mission two days later, on May 19th, 1943. I wonder what was more tiring for the crew- 25 combat missions stretched from November to May, or a 76 day, 31 city tour in the US, with people fawning all over them! Those guys were incredibly brave in my book. Photo courtesy of the NASA Glenn photo archives.

1-24485 (cn 41-24485) The original Memphis Belle displays some impressive mission markings while parked on the NACA ramp at CLE in July of 1943. Famous for flying 25 combat missions, its crew actually completed their 25 missions on Memphis Belles 24th mission, her 25th and final mission being flown on May 19th by a different crew. After that mission, the aircraft was destined to return to America to go on public display. And today, this historical aircraft is being restored at the USAF Museum for permanent display in Dayton (Where it also stopped on its War Bond Tour). N37505 (cn 42870) The cockpit of United Mainliner Sequoia taken at CLE in 1955. Used by NACA (later to become NASA in 1958) to study ice formation on aircraft, the ice recorder switch can be seen just over the left portion of the yoke. Just a bit of difference in technology from the glass cockpits of todays airliners.

N37505 (cn 42870) A gorgeous shot of United DC-6 Mainliner Sequoia loading at gate 2 at CLE in 1955. Note the old control tower under the nose of the aircraft! This DC-6 was another aircraft used by NACA to test icing conditions while flying normal revenue trips with United Airlines. The small icing antenna is the inverted U loop on the upper part of the fuselage. Photo courtesy of the NASA Glenn Photo archives.

Not sure if the aircraft pictured were still on the USAAF books or bailed to NACA for testing. Pictured is a Lockheed Hudson, Consolidated B-24, and Boeing B-29. None (cn None) Looking down the approach end of the new Runway 9L (now 10/28) at CLE in January, 1951. The concrete still looks pretty fresh! Note Brookpark road to the left, and the newly constructed Ford plant to the right. A Constellation and DC-3 can be seen on the ramp. I cropped this image from the original picture to place the focus on the airport itself. Photo courtesy of NASA Glenn Archives.

N30068 (cn 10288) If only this picture was in color! This United DC-4 Cargoliner was used by NACA to test for icing rates during normal airline operations. The icing rate meter probe is the very thin inverted U shape wire in front of the air scoop. This aircraft was delivered to the USAAF on 3/8/44, was acquired by United on 3/31/47 and converted to DC-4 standards, and was used for carrying cargo. Serving United until 7/27/56, N30068 served with other operators until being w/o in a crash on 9/19/61. Photographed on the ramp at CLE, note the UA DC-3 also in the background. 44-69858 (cn 44-69858) With only a few months until the end of WW2, this US Army Air Force B-29 made an apperance at the Fisher B-29 Bomber Plant No 2 Open House at Cleveland Airport on 5/20/45. The Fisher plant, now the IX Center and also known as the tank plant, made control surfaces and engine nacelles for the B-29. Here is something neat- I purchased this photo for my collection at the IX Center, only a couple hundred feet from where the B-29 is parked in the photo!

None (cn None) While the Battle of Britain was raging over London skies, this is how Cleveland (Ohio) Municipal Airport looked on August 21, 1940. American Airlines occupied the second hangar from the bottom. The main terminal occupied the lighter rectangular area on the upper third of the picture. Note how rural the surrounding area was at the time! A recent addition to my photo collection.

Unknown (cn Unknown) In a snapshot from his scrapbook, my maternal grandfather, Ageton "Aggie" Sobbota (left) poses in front of a Fleet Model biplane with a friend in 1936 at what would become Cleveland Hopkins airport. The aircraft is one of the Fleet models, but I'm not sure which one, and if you can figure it out please let me know! The Piper Cub in the background just goes to show you that good designs never die!

Unknown (cn Unknown) My grandfather poses in front of what was then a brand-new Boeing 237 airliner, at Cleveland Municipal Airport, which would later be renamed Hopkins. My grandfather was a barnstorming pilot throughout the thirties and forties, and this is the only airliner picture I've found in his collection so far. 1936
