American Airlines has violated a rule on handling aircraft recorders following incidents and will not be allowed to participate in a federal investigation of why its jet overran a runway last week.

The National Transportation Safety Board requires airlines to submit the cockpit voice recorder and the digital flight data recorder immediately to its lab following incidents without accessing or changing the recorded information.
